SACC

The Sexual Assault Crisis Center (SACC) is one of only eight freestanding comprehensive sexual assault and abuse centers in Tennessee. Our mission is to provide quality services for all victims and survivors of sexual assault and abuse, and promote a peaceful, just society through advocacy and education in partnership with the community. The organization is committed to excellence in the provision of services to our clients through continued professional development and equitable treatment of our staff and volunteers.

The Sexual Assault Crisis Center began in 1973, only one year after the first rape crisis center in the nation opened in Washington, DC. Organized as a grassroots response to the growing awareness of rape around the University of Tennessee campus and originally named "The Knoxville Rape Crisis Center," SACC was the result of the combined energy and dedication of students, faculty, community professionals, religious leaders, volunteers and survivors.

Through the last 28 years, SACC has evolved from an organization well-known among women's groups and in the victim/survivor community to an established and respected resource in the broader community. By identifying service gaps in the community, SACC has broadened its scope of services by developing programs to serve individuals who have been victims of any sexual abuse and/or assault-not just rape. The addition of these services has resulted in agency growth, which was beyond our wildest expectations. The agency currently employs 40 staff (12 full-time and 28 part-time/contract) dedicated to providing crisis intervention, counseling, sexual abuse/assault education and prevention programs, victim advocacy, victim accompaniment, and forensic nursing services to victims in nine East Tennessee counties.

SACC is a private non-profit agency funded by United Way, city and county governments, Tennessee Department of Human Services and Department of Health, Tennessee Bar Foundation IOLTA grant, and other foundation grants and private donations. Contributions are tax deductible. SACC depends on volunteers who are involved in every aspect of operation. Those who cannot contribute their time, but who wish to support SACC, can donate monetary gifts that help SACC continue to provide services free of charge.
